merry christmas.

on christmas eve, i snuggled down with my pillows and a blanket on the floor, and just sat in the glow of the tree. it was so relaxing to just sit there in the quiet and warm glow, and stare at the lights. i decompressed, did some reflecting, and sorted through some thoughts that have been fluttering through my head. i love the twinkling lights, so pretty, they gave me a sense of calm.

may the light of the season be with you throughout the year.
merry christmas!

by the light of the tree.

after a busy day, full of holiday bustle and 3 days of hard training runs, yoga by the light of the tree was so relaxing and refreshing. my muscles thanked me.

Dear Santa.

Um, Santa, if you or your helpers are reading, you can add this idea to my wish list.

Many thanks.

Saturday, December 3, 2011

it's dec. 3.

it's december 3rd.

i did not sign up for the princess race. remember i had wanted to do so by december 1 to have my name on my bib? well. i had that in my mind. i really thought i would have signed up. but i did not. i just didn't have the 150+taxes and fees to pay for a race right now. (i could have signed up for $10 or $20 less, but those price deadlines have passed, and i was just not sure of any race plans at those times)

it's not ruled out yet, but i have some other things to take care of first, such as fun things like christmas gifts, and not fun things like bills and food and gas, before i can allow myself to pay for that race. as i said before, disney races aren't cheap. it makes me a little mad, because the price is high because it is disney. so ridiculous. yet i am sucked into the draw. that is ridiculous too. but it is so fun, and it is a great time out there on the course.....

anyway, it is still on my mind, even more now b/c i think this is the year i HAVE to go for that coast to coast medal. disneyland just put out their info for the half in september, and holy price increase. it's a now or never sort of thing, it seems the prices only get higher each year! as with the princess and all other races, there are price increments. 3 to be exact. the earlier you sign up, the less you pay. for disneyland half, there is a difference of $30.00 between the first deadline to sign up and the last. i can't even print the prices on here. i might make the computer crash. you'll have to go look it up for yourself if you are curious. let's just say, it makes the princess look cheap.

so ok, cheerleaders, if you wanna come to disneyland, i plan to be there labor day weekend 2012. and i also plan to be signed up by the "first price"deadline of february 26 (happy birthday, kim! also coincidentally, the day of the princess), there is no way i am paying more than that!

i just need to get my ducks in a row. keep in shape (i want an elliptical to strengthen my thighs, i felt them today!), try to eat healthy enough, take my vitamins, stick to a training plan, and find those seeds to plant that money tree. easy peasy.

working at it.

i have been running steadily for 3 weeks straight now, since being sick. hurray! the last 2 weeks have been steadier, with the first week just "getting my legs" back.

my pace is not at the place it was during the summer/early fall, but i am trying. i did my second official long run today (6 miles!), and it went well. i have not run 5 or 6 miles in months.

i did really well during the summer, waking up before dawn to get out and get in mileage before work nearly each day. i saw some amazing sunrises during those runs. now, i am trying to get back that speed and mileage that i had during the summer!

i am not signed up for any races yet, but i am using the princess half marathon on feb. 26th as my goal. even if i don't get to participate in it, at least i am getting in the work. so i am training toward that race as my goal for now. i do hope to be able to do it, and then i will want to go for the disneyland half in september to get that extra medal---->(coast to coast).

i feel pressure to figure out if i can get to florida in february, as the deadline to have your name printed on your bib is december 1st. i don't have to have my name on my bib should i participate, but it'd be nice! you pay a lot for those races, might as well get what you can! we'll see. having my name on the bib isn't the end all, and if i have to hold off and miss my name on the bib, then i will. i want to be smart when "buying" this race and trip. so long as it doesn't sell out before i am ready to commit, i am good. name or no name on the bib, i want to run. december 1st is a goal to work toward for commitment, and it's ok if i can't commit then, i won't die b/c my name is left off my bib. my other goal is to commit when i feel ready to, ($ and otherwise).

my goals in this "training" are to focus on as many good, decent runs, with less junk miles as i have had in the past. this means working on speed by doing tempo runs and speedwork more than i have in the past, runs at determined paces, figuring out a race pace, long runs that are slower than goal pace, some mixed paced long runs too, and getting in some hillwork at the park. in my past training plans, i focused more on just running, rather than these sorts of things. i am hoping that these will help me to improve on finish time in other races as well this year, which is the point of doing them! i will say, that i did more of that sort of thing (but not enough) for the myrtle beach race i ran a year ago, and which holds my half marathon pr.

should i run the princess, my goal is to stop less along the route, and try to improve my disney race time. i know i won't pr, due to the fun of this race (to do so, i'd basically have to not stop at all, and at disney, i just can't do that!). since i ran this race last year, and got lots of photos, my plan would be to still stop for a photo op along the route, just not as much as i did last year.

i also want to run outside as much as i can; i am hoping to be more brave than i was last winter. we'll see.

i do have my little treadmill for back up, but i do enjoy seeing my speed and distance (i am addicted to my garmin...helps me to control my pace and of course distance outside), which my treadmill no longer gives me. but at least it works and i can run on it if needed, and that is what counts! (last winter, i basically did just that, and ran for certain amounts of time rather than knowing the distance....i.e...outside 3 miles = approx. about 30 minutes give or take, so the treadmill i'd run 30 minutes and hope i was near that distance. let me tell you, running on it for 2+ hours is not so fun though, no matter what kind of treadmill it is!).

currently, in the last 2 weeks, i have done some speed intervals, and it is good to do this on the treadmill. it works out fine with the state of my treadmill, i just use my stop watch to control speed intervals, and then adjust the speed dial slow/fast for each interval.

i have lots of time to work until the princess race, and i am really hoping to get down there to do it, and then head west in the fall to get in my first disneyland race/medal, and that special 3rd medal!

hello.

so i have been missing in action! guess not too much to report. the big thing so far this fall was a fun get away and being sick!

Disneyland
i was able to go on a getaway to disneyland with aunt linda for some fun. it was a rather last minute trip, and i was not at all prepared (for the expense), but threw caution to the wind and went. it was awesome. we decided we needed to get some west coast air. the big thing was to find aunt linda's disney brick that was given to her as a gift. found it! we enjoyed all the halloween fun that is happening in disneyland park. it was a wonderful getaway, and one i want to just go back on.

Sick
i came home, and a week later i was sick. it's been 23 days now. a cough has invaded me and decided to live in my chest. it's been hard and bad. 23 days (and counting, it's still here!) of literally coughing every few minutes has taken a toll on me, but i think i am on the mend (after lots of medicine and antibiotics). hurray! i hope i have some good, tight abs after all this hacking. i even pulled a back muscle.

Running plans
so since i have been sick, i have not run in nearly a month. i gave myself a week off after my california trip, due to the "after a trip depression". then i started up again the week i became sick, and that didn't go too well.

originally, at the start of 2011, i had the crazy thought to try the full disney world marathon in january 2012. i am glad i didn't sign up. if i had, my training would have stopped and i would have panicked. it is still a race i am unsure about, the training for it as well as actually doing the race, which is one reason i didn't sign up, among some others.

i'll be starting from scratch with running and all exercise. it's been nice to be lazy, but i also feel the effect of doing nothing. there was no way to run with this cough. i am hoping soon to start back again. good thing i chose not to do any fall races, or even the disney half in january, b/c i literally would have missed a good chunk of training. and to think 6 months ago i was considering doing the full disney world marathon. good thing that didn't happen, i would have been in major freak out mode this past month!

i want to do a half marathon. i like them. i really, really want the coast to coast medal that disney offers. of course getting it won't be cheap. to earn that, i need to do a disney world and a disneyland race in the same calendar year. my thought is to do the princess half again, and then the disneyland half in september, and get that special medal. the 2nd thought is to do the disneyland half in september, and the wine n dine half at wdw in october......a month apart. that would be fun, but financially so close it'd be hard to handle.

disney races are not cheap. the entry fee is more than "normal" and expensive. then there is the travel expense. at this point in time, it's not even an option for me to do these races, but i am going to try like heck to get myself in them.

i feel like i need a big race to do, i miss that excitement of the race day and i feel like i need something to work toward. sometimes having a goal like that is good for me.

and i really want that coast to coast medal. it's very nice and pretty and shiny.

i also plan to do the cleveland half again this spring, but that is almost a given. it's cheap (compared to disney) and i live here. it's easy!

so that is what has been happening. a little travel and a lot of thinking and too much coughing!

retired.

this is long overdue, but earlier this summer my dad retired from pnc bank! he was quite happy! we had a little celebration party at his fishing club, where he now spends most of his time! it was a nice afternoon, with lots of friends and family fun! congratulations, dad!

remembering 9/11.

it's hard to believe it has been 10 years since september 11th. the day that changed all of our lives. do you remember where you were? i do. i was at work, like most others were.

i didn't lose anyone due to the events of that day, i did know of a friend who was vacationing in nyc that day. she was there for the events, but was able to make it home safely in the following days, unharmed. my mom has a friend on long island, but she was ok too.

i remember i was at work when the events played out. i worked in a daycare in the infant room. my assistant director (and also a good friend) came in telling me planes had flown into the world trade center towers, but wasn't sure if it was terrorism or not. a little while later she came in and told me about the plane going down in pennsylvania. i didn't really understand what was going on, and i just went about my day. a few parents came to get their kids, but i don't recall too many leaving. my bff and coworker came in around 10:30 that day, and told me about the towers and the towers falling. i still didn't quite comprehend it all. i honestly don't remember much, i must have blocked it out, or i was very busy caring for the babies that day, which was normal everyday!

i didn't quite "get it" til i was driving home, and turned on the radio and hearing about all the smoke. i can still see myself driving up the road to the freeway, to go home, hearing that. i also called my mom to see what she could tell me. when i got home, i was finally able to see (6 hours later) what exactly happened. what hell nyc was. then it hit me what happened. what horror. i couldn't imagine being in nyc witnessing that. or in washington d.c. seeing the pentagon damage. or the field in pennsylvania. i know i immediately felt sadness and scared, especially for those people on the planes and in the buildings and those trying to get out.

i remember either that night, or in the following days seeing senators or state representatives, i forget exactly who, at the end of a news broadcast, singing "god bless america" on tv, on the steps of the capitol in washington, d.c.

i remember how quiet the skies were when all planes were grounded. it was eerily quiet.....we get quiet a few planes flying overhead each day.

i didn't go through anything compared to what the families of those who lost their lives that day, or even those who experienced it firsthand, but i did have some lasting effects of the influence of what happened. i remember having a nightmare, that we were invaded again. in this dream, as my house is near a lake (you can see lake erie from my window), that we were being attacked again, this time from the lake. there were big battle ships and in my dream, i knew they were getting us again. i can still vividly see the image that was in that dream, and the sound of the motors in the eerie quiet night in the dream as they approached the shoreline. there was more to the dream, but that is what i can remember. i had such a scared feeling in that dream. i remember waking up quite scared, but relieved it was a dream.

to this day, if i see a low flying airplane, or even hear one that is low flying, or just loud, and sounds like it is close, i get an uneasy feeling, wondering if something is wrong, again. it's just an automatic feeling i have now, anytime i see or hear big, low flying planes....or really loud ones.

last night i was watching footage on the internet of that day. the phone calls that were made from the towers, asking for help. the video of the planes crashing into the building, and video of people hanging out of windows and jumping. last night, even though it is 10 years later, it really hit, exactly what happened. i am not sure why i am really starting to realize what happened, i did understand and know what happened, but for some reason, it has really hit. maybe it is all the talk of the 10th anniversary and the new terror alerts, or maybe it was just something i blocked in my mind because of the horror.

3 months after 9/11 i spent a day in nyc with my friend. we didn't go to ground zero, even though i wanted to, but she wasn't ready to. we did see it from atop the empire state building. well, we saw "where" it was, as we didn't get that far downtown. i am glad we still went on that trip. we almost didn't.

anyway, i wrote all this to say, that i remember and won't forget. i am thankful for what others have done for our freedom. i am proud to be american. i am proud of america on that day, for standing strong through a horrible time.

god bless america. land that i love.

heaven 9/11 tributes.

i found this amongst all the 9/11 tributes. if this doesn't get you, i don't know what will.
you WILL need a box of tissues, be forewarned.

and i heard this "remix" on the radio the other day while driving the girls that i nanny for home....same song, with updated talks to daddy.

the "pre-teen" and i were in tears. (the tween was asleep!).....when we heard this version, all i could think of were the 3 young girls in my life...addy, v, and k. ages (currently) 3, 9, and 11. and how many kids those ages 10 years ago were in this situation. it makes you remember to hug the ones you love.

zooey.

i have taken care of kids all my life. i babysat when i was young, and it was my job throughout the teen years too. i majored in early childhood education at college. you can say, children have been my life. literally.

i have been a nanny for 9 years now, which i can't believe, it's the longest job i have ever had! anyway, i met the family through my old job, they hired me when the 2nd child was on her way.....i was the infant teacher at a daycare for the oldest, and we all bonded, i even babysat, and eventually came into their home and have been there since. 9 years later, we are going strong.

being a nanny can be zooey at times. the older they get, the crazier it gets. i don't know if it is any easier, well, in some ways it is, but in other ways.....hello exhaustion.

today was the last day of their summer vacation. i am ready for the fall. my hours (and pay) are different during the school year, but this year, i am ready for the change. just cause their older, doesn't mean it's any easier. i was good at the younger years, i had lots of practice, i went to school specifically for the birth to pre k age. now i find myself in the "tween" and pre teen stages of life. i have not been here since i was going through this stage myself! it's not easy. holy cow. i am just as exhausted now as i was when they were both toddling around the house. i also consider myself nanny to the 2 cats and 2 dogs, but they are another story in and of themselves!
so with these girls at the ages they are, sometimes, you don't know what to expect. moodiness can run rampant, at the drop of a hat (oh, and there have been some wonkers too!). likes and dislikes change with the wind. but then, there is still that peek of their younger days. the random hug, the random hand being held when you are out. i do love that last one, the random hand being held. sometimes i never know what their reaction to something might be, and sometimes i predict it dead on, and sometimes i am thoroughly surprised.

today (and last week) i was surprised. today we went to the zoo. last week the nature center. we didn't get to do much in the way of fun outings this summer, as the older they get, the more jam packed their days are, especially in the summer with camps and sports and get aways. so i crammed a few in the last week or so before school, when we actually didn't have much scheduled. today's trip to the zoo really surprised me. the younger one really wanted to go, and had been asking everyday, "is today the zoo day?". so when i told her it was today, she was like "yes!!". so was the older one. what really got me was their reactions to the animals at the zoo. in the past, a lot of times it would be "oh look a giraffe, ok, next." today, they had genuine excitement, as they reacted to what they saw. it reminded me of the days when they were younger, closer to my niece's age of 3, when we would see the animals; there was the excitement. the comments. the "oh, let's go to that area!" excitement of what was next on the list to see. i think what floored me was the excitement of wanting to ride the train. and of all of us, guess who suggested it? the pre teen. so we did the train. i let them do a lot today that we have not done since they were a lot younger. it had actually been about 2 years since we went to the zoo, due to school and summer schedules, so maybe it was "new" to them again. but i think today they were just more in the moment. in the past, we always had limits. one special treat such as feeding the birds, or riding the train, or going in the gift shop, or feeding the seals. and the last few times we did go (albeit a year or so ago), none of those were even a choice b/c i didn't have the cash, or there was no interest. so today, for really the first time with them, i allowed them to do "the treats", and did them without limits (except we didn't eat any special junk food, much to their dismay, so there were limits on that and what they could spend in the gift shop!). they fed the birds, they rode the train (and insisted i come with them, when really, they were old enough to do it alone, and sadly, we can't all sit together as we are all too big!), we would have fed the seals but we got there at a non feeding hour. i guess what i am trying to say is that it was so nice and refreshing to still see that childhood innocence in them today at the zoo. sometimes it's hard to come by now a days. oh, there were other giggles too.....the realization of tampon machine in the restroom by the younger one, knowing what animals were males by just looking a them. all that fun stuff. the younger one, the tween, is always good for a giggle.

as exhausted both mentally and physically, sometimes emotionally, as i am (the last couple of years have probably been the hardest on my job yet, for a variety of reasons), i still love these girls like they were my own.

my favorite part of this day was walking along the paths, with hands randomly holding mine, walking along, and suddenly, there is a hand grabbing mine as we walked along. one on the left, one on the right. i try to savor these moments because tomorrow, is a whole nother day, with new attitudes abound.

it was a good last day to summer.

and way better than the day before the last day of summer (yesterday) for sure.

birthday wishes cousin.

happy birthday, cousin marla!
have a happy day!

christmas in july.

a few weekends ago, my mom, aunt, cousin, and i went to visit "a christmas story" house and museum. this is the home that was used in the 1984 movie "a christmas story". it was filmed right here in cleveland! the interior of the house was used for filming the movie, as well as outside, and other places around town. it was fun to see it. the setting of the movie was in the 30's or 40's, so it is decorated with that time frame in mind, and to coincide with the movie. the leg lamp was in the front window, the bars of soap prominently displayed in the bathroom, the infamous gift desired by "ralphie" on display by the christmas tree (the bb gun). the movie was filmed at this house, as well as at downtown Higbees department store.....i vaguely remember my mom taking us down to higbees during the filming, to see the "santa slide" set up in the store. i remember it seeming big, tall, and pink! i have not watched this movie in years, and i think i need to watch it again after having gone through the house and the museum. the museum was full of props and clothing used during the filming, as well as scripts, photos (professional and from personal collections), and remnants from the sets. it was very interesting. we even go to meet "ralphie's" little brother "randy", actor ian petrella.

here are the photos!

the gun box in the corner of the living room

so we had to make fools of ourselves and try on the hats and scarves on the coat rack....my mom got the pilot hat (?) that one of the kids wore in the film, i got the pink bunny hat (ralphie had to wear pink bunny pj's in the film), and the other 2 got the scarves!

i need to watch this movie again, i remember "ralphie" (actor peter billingsley) more from the chocolate milk commercial than the movie!
bathroom set up just like in the movie where ralphie had to put soap in his mouth for his punishment....yuck!

it was a fun afternoon! now i need to watch the movie again, after being here, and hearing some of the stories about the filming of the movie, and seeing all the museum displays.
